Dry to the bone: the malnourishment of Los Angeles and how Angelenos are fighting back – By Jason Pham

In preparation for the week to come, Sunday morning trips to the grocery store seem like second nature to working-class residents. According to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, Los Angeles households rank food as their third most costly living expense, spending 13.6% of their budget on grocery trips and restaurants.

But for a large portion of Angelenos, when the budget is tight, food is one of the first factors to be affected.

“I’m a single mother and I’m a student and I don...

Marked this year by Sarah Burton’s last Spring-Summer 2024 collection for Alexander McQueen and Gigi Hadid walking for virtually every designer brand, October is my favorite month of the year for one reason and one reason only: It’s fashion month. “Fashion weeks” are being held every week of the month across the world, with cities and countries like Shanghai, New York, London and Los Angeles hosting their own collection of fashion shows and runways.
I can’t lie. Scrolling through the effortless...

My passion for dumplings and dim sum has been a rocky rollercoaster since I first arrived in Los Angeles. From upscale prices like Paradise Dynasty to even local chains like Mama Lu’s Dumpling House, the combination of affordability, taste and dining comfort is difficult to master all in one restaurant. Having grown up frequenting mom-and-pop dim sum shops with special bundle pricing and handwritten menus, I hold high expectations for dumplings as a holistic eating experience.
Yet after leaving...

Savory savings in the form of skewers - Daily Trojan

Fitting in as a college student comes at a price many can’t afford, especially surrounded by the luxurious USC and Los Angeles lifestyle. I grew up with smart, immigrant parents who stretched their dollar. Attending USC was not only an opportunity for me that my family sacrificed so much for by moving to the United States, but it also served as a challenge to find my place in a community where I felt financially divided.
Affordable eating in L.A. should be more than just bland dining hall food a...
